The Weatherman  by  Mara Buck

 

Shifting patterns,

Can’t guarantee,

Ha! Ha!  We think you’ll have

A fine weekend for the game.

 

Ten thousand small brown

People dead from the great hurricane.

It won’t reach us,

(Except for some trailers.)

Brown thousands more sick and homeless

In brown muddy waters on

Brown global spots.

Yellow millions uncounted

At risk from typhoons...

Author’s note:  I wrote this poem decades ago.  What and where were the tragedies?  Who was that announcer named Bob?  I don’t remember.  And unfortunately, that is what makes it timeless.  Earthquake, hurricane, drought, flood, tsunami, blizzard.  It all happens to “them.” 

I believe my writing has improved since then.  The plight of the world has not.
