Two years ago I created an art installation entitled Inside/Outside, and have now created a mirror image of sorts entitled Outside/Inside. Similar, yet different. Same time of year, same species blooming, yet this one a bit grittier, a few more slings of outrageous fortune, perhaps a bit more expressionistic than impressionistic. And then there’s the introspection of a self-portrait on a mirror, but, well, you be the judge. The first installation is available in my picture gallery, but this latest is now available on video. I have indeed embraced the evolution of technology, though I apologize for my lighting designer!
The installation comprises three salvaged doors arranged as a free-standing screen displaying daily spontaneous artworks in collage, pastel, oil, watercolor. Various found objects suggest imaginary scenarios between the doors, their former owners and the artworks hidden on the other side. Each viewer will bring his or her own experiences to the interpretation while walking around the installation.
Doors form such an integral part of our lives, yet how conscious are we of what lies on the other side? Of what hands may have opened these doors and may have briefly or irrevocably touched us? Of what each humble piece of wood has itself experienced in an existence that may prove longer than our own? Please click here to watch: http://www.redroom.com/video/outsideinside-2010-a-visit-with-artist-an-installation
