While writing feeds as well as challenges my spirit, I find that marketing my published book can easily deflate me. So balance is essential: write, market, cook, do yoga, in that order, to keep the engine of productivity lubricated and effective. Some things, like reading and signing events, require a long view, for most venues, from bookstores to book clubs to colleges and retreat centers, plan up to a year ahead. Others require spontaneity, like getting word out in a hurry about a new review in a periodical or a radio appearance. Some things require endless effort with little result, like the do-it-yourself book tour I'm currently arranging, while others, like making Image Journal's Top Ten of 2009, fall in your lap. I'm finding AME's (Author Marketing Expert) free newsletter to be a great help in showing me better ways of using social media and understanding how blogging can be effective. For me, a first-time author, it's learn as you go and never forget that balance.
