For those of you who live in the Los Angeles area I recommend you attend the literary and cultural series of authors in conversation hosted by WritersBlock.
Last night my husband and I experienced a conversation between Jules Feiffer and Carl Reiner, and I'm so glad I took advantage of the opportunity. Both men are in their 80s, so I don't know how many chances there are left to see/hear them again - especially together!
Reiner essentially interviewed Feiffer about his new memoir, Backing into Forward, about, according to the event flyer, "his development into one of our most subversive commentators, his almost lyrical musings about love and sex and fatherhood, and his relationships with other signature artists of the sixties and seventies. It's sometimes dark, often poignant, really funny, and includes pages of his instantly recognizable cartoons."
Reiner asked Feiffer questions about his relationship with his mother, how he got his first job for which he worked for free, and why he developed his comic strip character, Monroe - among others. Feiffer admitted that he used writing and the creation of a four year old character that was drafted into the Army to help him withstand and live through his Army experience.
Feiffer now lives in South Hampton where he teaches a class in writing funny. It's something we all should look into. He also commented upon the brilliance of some of the graphic novels out these days though he laments that the comic strip business started in the 20s that a lot of us old folks grew up with is long gone.
Afterward, both men signed their books. Carl Reiner signed Just Desserts and Jules Feiffer signed his memoir for us. I am thrilled to add them to our collection of signed first additions.
