My favorite thing about getting older is that I've turned into an Auntie Mame. It seems that children and young adults gravitate toward me, and I in turn take them under my wing and spoil them as much as I can. I recently spent time with my youngest greats - five-year old great niece Anna and four-year old great nephew Ian - playing games with them and showering them with gifts. My motto is: bribery will get you everywhere. But, really, since I don't get to see them very often I want to give them something special to remember me by. And, I just love how they call me Auntie Mad-el-ine in those little squeaky voices. The most endearing part of the visit was when I told them I'd see them on Sunday they wanted to know if tomorrow was Sunday.
Besides relatives I have befriended three teen age girls whom I've known virtually from birth. We are all Facebook friends now - yes I even keep up with the youngsters on their social networks, and they all wished me Happy Birthday on my Wall. I spend alot of time going to lunch and to the movies with one of them, and at my encouragement she now has a blog on which she critiques movies. Imagine my joy in receiving a mother's day card from her calling me her grandmother - since I have no grandchildren of my own. It is so wonderful watching and experiencing these children growing up. I'd like to think I've had and will continue to have some influence in how they all turn out.
