I give the award for “Book with the Most Despicable Characters of Any Book I’ve Ever Read” to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
I read it because it was a book club pick. I don’t think I would have chosen it on my own. And though I thought the writing was clever – I thought that really was the only point. Flynn wanted to show the reader how very clever she is.
So back to the characters. I hated them – the author did a good job making them more and more despicable as she progressed through the book. However, I don’t think she did a very good job in differentiating between them. The two main characters – one male and one female – sounded the same to me. Both so awful I couldn’t give a whit about them.
