Men had it that they should be the one wearing the pants when involved in a relationship. Even before technological era took place, the notion that men are above women, already existed. Be it in work, marriage, and simple boyfriend-girlfriend relationship and especially in the family, males should be in what they call as “top” position.
Let’s break down my examples and focus first in the aspect of work. In a working environment specifically in the technical aspect, females aren’t considered qualified for positions that cover such aspect. It is only now that women are given that itsy bitsy chance to work in a position where men usually are in. As for my second example, in marriage, husbands have this extra strong pride where they should be the one providing the bread and butter for his wife and kids. This conception even leads to hindering his wife to pursue her career where she studied for years on that only to know she’s not allowed to work but rather stay at home to take care of the kids, maintain the house and become a bitter nagger all her life. Although in some cases women prefer to be a loving mom and wife to her husband. It’s already been just years ago that the women of organizations against humiliation and gender discrimination took the fight seriously. In my third example, it’s a common and tradition for boyfriends to pay the bill in each date, pay the fare and such. The last one is family where elder siblings are the ones who take over the responsibility of a father who’s out of work. There should always be fairness in everything but I guess that word will remain the farthest dream you could ever reach for. Dream on, continue dreaming and hoping that you won’t be awakened.
With the connection to the discrimination and especially with the male ruling over the world, I’ve seen a boy, about 16-17 years old, two days ago walking beside the street with a red cap, red and black combination shirt, blue jeans and white rubber shoes while I was riding a vehicle and was sitting at the front seat. He’s just a typical teenager whom I bet came from school. Typical as he seems at your first glance, a surprise at your second look. Why a surprise? Well, let me start off by describing the way he walks. He walked with a statuesque body. When you look at him, he is as if so confident as though he just won a Mr. Confident of the Year award. But when you focus on his right hand, he is holding something like a pen. Oh wait! To my amazement, he was holding a cigarette. And so I said to myself, so this is why he is so confident and then I asked myself, why is he smoking at a very young age? Well, I kind of answered it by relating to his situation.
I smoked too when I was a bit younger than I am now. In fact, I was a chain smoker. I could smoke a whole pack of cigarettes in just a day. I got addicted to it to the point where my hands would shiver if I couldn’t smoke a stick in a day. My best friend is into that case as well. I even felt like we got closer at that time coz we shared cigarettes and lighter.
As I brought my thoughts back to that teenager I saw, I felt guilt within me. I felt like I was criticizing myself. I think I was even younger than him when I started smoking. I was at my second year of high school when I got into it real bad. But you know what the difference between teenagers and I have? I don’t show off when I smoke, he does. He was so confident that he was smoking. I never had that thought back then.
Smoking is like the fuel that keeps their ego running. Honestly, I don’t know why it is like that. There’s got to be an explanation why men feel that smoking adds up to their masculinity. There’s always an effect to men when they puff some cigars. They raise their shoulders when they smoke and feel like they have this Johnny Bravo ( a cartoon character famous for its muscle bonded body and macho voice) body as they walk and with chin raising up thinking that girls will go gaga over the smoke they give out and the image they try to portray.
My friends although not all of them smokes as well as some of my crushes, my brother and my father as well, it is such a trend that even women smoke with full pride and feels like they look sexy when they puff. I probably am blessed with a guy who doesn’t smoke an inch of a cigarette though we aren’t into a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship as of now. Smoking can somewhat be associated with playing basketball in a sense that it gives out that sense of pride to people who engage their selves into it.
I guess the sad truth on this trend is that not only are those people who smokes get their selves into trouble but so much more to those who smells the annoying odor that it gives out and damages their health twice than those who smokes and the worst that suffers from it is our environment. I don’t mean to sound so environmentalist but it is just a fact. It is so sad that our mother earth is suffering from the slow deterioration brought about by the hazardous smoke. Our ozone layer is getting worse each day that passes. It is just frustrating how people are so selfish not to think of the future effects of their actions.
So how do I end this article? Well I guess I’ll close it up by continuously dreaming that one day males will end their journey so as to set example to women and live life to the fullest instead.
