Lynn Ruth gives an overview of the book:

MORE THOUGHTS WHILE WALKING THE DOG is the second collection of the best columns written over the past several years in a continuing series for The Pacifica Tribune, Pacifica, CA.  These columns touch on topics that concern us all: women’s potential in our changing world, the idiosyncrasies of society and the challenges created by advancing years.  Each topic is illustrated with a touch of nostalgia addressed with humor in a vignette drawn from the author’s checkered past. The chosen pieces have received excellent and enthusiastic response from local readers and form the second volume in this series of THOUGHTS with an introduction by the assistant editor of The Pacifica Tribune, Elaine Larsen.

DETERMINATION

Music expresses that which is inexpressible

My Aunt Tick had a canary that loved to sing to the motor of her vacuum cleaner. The roar of that machine filled the bird’s heart with musical inspiration and he responded with counter melodies that trilled high above the whoosh of sucked up litter and demolished trash.

He demonstrated his single-minded devotion to his art one unforgettable day when my aunt decided to clean her draperies.  As she hauled out the vacuum cleaner and attached the extension hose, the bird’s delight was actually visible. He knew that soon he would have a well-deserved orchestral accompaniment for his opera grande and he was right.  My aunt turned on the machine and the little golden bird responded with a sublime Missa Gloria.  Aunt Tick was so involved with her task that she didn’t notice that her pet warbler had emerged from his cage and let the force of his melody sweep him to the top of the cornice.

The cleaner blared and the melodious canary launched into yet another aria inspired by the angels.  As my aunt lifted the vacuum cleaner wand to get into the drapery folds, she saw a flash of yellow disappear down the vacuum cleaner tube. She was horrified.
