Well, I was right, Rick Decker is no James Stenbeck. On the heels of yesterday’s announcement that Jon Prescott will be leaving As the World Turns at the end of August, comes casting news that has enormous potential for the show. The boards have been buzzing all day about the returns of Anthony Hererra as James Stenbeck and Grayson McCouch as Dusty Donovan. According to Roger at We Love Soaps, Hererra’s first air date is 27 August, McCouch, 24 September.
The announcement raises lots of questions. First, since Dusty was killed earlier this year (by Evan Walsh, the younger). So, will ATWT continue the “ghost” fad, or ask viewers to suspend disbelief and accept that Dusty’s “death” was engineered by James. My preference would be the latter; this ghost thing is getting old fast.
As to what kind of story this casting might lead to, some interesting thoughts on the Media Domain board: MaryHatch loves the idea, but…
“if they put Herrara ON CONTRACT and made James an integral, long-term part of the show by "de-cartooning" him. If this is just another short stint of lurking behind potted plants, no thanks. The actor and the fans deserve better.”
A sentiment echoed by GLATWTfan:
“Thank God!! It’s about time we had a cool villain on this show. Now as long as the writers dont make in a cartoon character, like Hogan Sheffer, we might have a cool storyline. I want to see the old James Stenbeck return, still evil but wanting to reunite with his son.”
I’m feeling the same combination of hope and skepticism. I have to say, this poisoned jewelry story is not inspiring a lot of confidence, but I’ll be watching.
