Got this email recently, had to share it:
"Love the new YouTube page( http://youtu.be/3HXGnn3zkHU )and as I commented I would like to hear the section re Mulligan's cat & the DHSS man. I had just read this section from your book when my brother Bob and sisiter-in-law Lucilla called round. I was helpless with laughter, so, unable to catch my breath I handed the book to them and pointed out the relevant paragraphs.
I would explain that my brother, his wife and myself are passionately fond of animals but also share a keen sense of humour - usually! Having read the fate of poor Mulligan's cat and the DHSS man, both were very solemn looking and Lucilla said quietly "Well I think it's rather macabre" to which I replied "Yes it is - that's why it's funny!"
Then it hit me that their beloved cat, Bramble, having reached the ripe old age of 16 years, had to be put to sleep 2 weeks previously.
At any other time I would be most apologetic and sensitive to there painful loss, however for some reason their serious expression just caused a prolonged and uncontrollable fit of the titters and not wishing to seem cruel, I felt obliged to exit the lounge rapidly, dive into the kitchen to put the kettle on (hand firmly clamped over my mouth) and dash through the passage to lock myself in the bathroom where I could indulge in 2 minutes of tear jerking hysteria before being able to rejoin them in the lounge, feigning composure and armed with tea! Not sure I am forgiven yet. C'est la vie!
