I'm a horror/suspense writer living in Pismo Beach, CA, currently working on a new short story collection. My novel THE SAFETY OF UNKNOWN CITIES won the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel in 1996, and I've had three novels (NAILED, SAVING SOULS, and LEFT TO DIE) published by Penguin. Most recently, my fiction appears in the EXOTIC GOTHIC series, vols. 1, 2, and 3. I volunteer with the Feline Network, a local cat rescue group, where I trap ferals to be neutered and returned. In my spare time, I enjoy ballroom and Latin dancing, kayaking, yoga, and trips up the Big Sur coast to Esalen and other retreat centers.
Since childhood, when I read "Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine" I have loved scary, disturbing stuff. Some of my all-time favorite authors are Dennis Lehane, John Connolly, John Sandford, Michael Connolly, Dan Simmons, Rikki Ducornet, Robert Crais,Sarah Waters, Karin Slaughter, Christopher Reich, and others too numerous to mention.
On a different track, I have also been profoundly influenced by spiritual teachers such as Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti, Jeff Foster, and Michael Singer.
I'm currently at work on a short story collection with the working title HOW REAL MEN DIE. I also have many previously published books, including THE SAFETY OF UNKNOWN CITIES, that are being re-issued in ebook format by the Overlook Press.
