I Only Ask

I was just reading John Braun´s post, about prayer, and the image that came to my mind was the one of soccer players in Brazil, holding hands in a circle, praying for victory. Really, do they really think that winning a game is worth a prayer? Why would God  help them win and not the other team? What difference can that really make in the world?

I have a colleague at university who prays every single day for protection against her enemies. What enemies? I ask her. All those liars, those hypocrites who don´t want to approve my projects. They´ll fall. One after another. Oh boy, that´s a good Christian there. Love, fraternity, compassion...Note: some of her projects do have big problems. She´s just too self-centered to realize that.

Solo le Pido a Dios is a song written by Argentinian singer León Gieco and immortalized in the voice of another Argentinian, Mercedes Sosa. From the first time I listened to it, in my adolescence in the 80´s, it became my idea of a prayer. Outlandish , the Danish group, has a beautiful version in English of Gieco´s song.

If you, like me, like to practice your Spanish, here´s the lyrics:

Ellen, unfortunatelly she

Ellen, unfortunatelly she just "verbalized" the way a lot of people use their prayers/wishes for. It´s more and more a "me, me, me, myself and I" culture, and somehow religion, as some people see it ( like a child/parent relationship), seems to fit in the universe they have around their navel. Like a spoiled child demanding attention and material compensation from a distant parent, some people expect the same from their relationship to God or whatever they call Him/Her.

Those kinds of prayers can

Those kinds of prayers can only bring on the bad karma.  I don't think God answers them in the way the person doing the "praying" wishes.

When people do me wrong, it's not that I'm not peeved.  But if I pray about it, my prayer is more along the lines of hoping that justice is, in the end, served.  I leave the details to the creator.

Can she read this blog?

People can read our concern, and I think that helps although it may not be directly.  I also think you can refer her to this site.  If she cannot read English, you can translate our concern.

misuse of prayer

Luciana,
I agree completely! This same idea is why I shun the concept of angels. I can't accept that someone somewhere had the guidance and protection of an angel while someone else somewhere else didn't warrant one. That doesn't sit well with me.
Prayer, in my view, should be more like meditation, concentration or focus to help you make what you need come to fruition through your efforts.
