Born and raised in Los Angeles, undergraduate work at Cornell and UCLA. Received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Ohio State University in 1961. Taught at the University of Oregon, U.C. Berkeley, U.C. San Francisco Medical School. Professor of Psychoanalytic Studies at the California Institute of Technology from 1970 to the present (currently Emeritus Professor). Founding President of The Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles in 1990.
Author of seven books including the acclaimed biography "Freud: Darkness in the Midst of Vision, (John Wiley, 2000.) Most recent book: " A Dream of Undying Fame: How Freud Betrayed His Mentor and Invented Psychoanalysis."
