An agent had not materialized. It was not for lack of query-ing.
I contacted a former teacher/mentor, "Why oh why is no one responding when I'm trying so hard?"
Never one to mince words: "I hate the title of the novel. Editors probably had it too. You're log line is not exciting enough. The query letter itself is OK, but could be better. If these things are not ready, I can only imagine the novel is not ready. Change the title, the log line, rewrite the query, but only after you have the novel ghost edited."
Well, OK. Since none of this is going to happen while the holidays are upon us, I am putting that project aside and am going to focus on better news. Aside from the newspaper column I write bi-monthy, I am going to be writing a weekly column for a website called Care.com.
One writing door closes, another opens.
