Co-edited by Lisa Suhair Majaj and Amal Amireh. The first-ever book-length collection of essays on the Lebanese/French/American author and artist Etel Adnan, this volume brings together essays that respond to the depth of vision and experience in Adnan's writing and art and that place her artistic accomplishments within wider literary contexts. The volume includes a separate section of essays offering in-depth analysis of Adnan's landmark novel about the Lebanese civil war, Sitt Marie Rose.
Lisa gives an overview of the book:
Adnan is a writer who maintains a fierce engagement with political, social and historical realities, one for whom the experience of dislocation and the mediation of distance and longing are predominant themes. At the same time she is an artist acutely engaged with her immediate surroundings, with nature, with color and light -- someone for whom the act of perception is itself the defining moment. Her work, both artistic and literary, builds on myriad junctures between perception, translation, poetic insight, and philosphical paradox; between an interrogation of selfhood and an insistence on being in the world. This merging of artistic and philosphical interrogation with political awareness and a postcolonial sensibility informes her cultural production in striking ways.

When I first discovered Etel Adnan's work I loved it so much that I bought extra copies of her novel Sitt Marie Rose to keep on my shelf so that I would always have copies on hand to give away as presents. This collection , is one more way of helping to spread the word about the work of this amazing woman.
