I am a Chicago-based Web-designer/ writer/ Internet marketing specialist. I've worked in publishing for more than 13 years as a magazine editor, Web designer, book author, magazine feature writer, and Web director (pretty much in that order).
During much of 1999, I worked on what would be my first book, Design For Interaction. The book explores the concept of user interface design beyond Web design, expanding its scope to print, products, and environments.
My second book, Web Design That Works, tackles the elusive notion of just what it is that makes a Web site successful. When writing this book, I focused on four different possible types of sites—content, ecommerce, portals, and promotional. Using more than twenty sites as case studies, I deconstructed what made these sites work and pulled out tips other designers can incorporate into their own work
I decided to start my own Web design business when I relocated from San Francisco to Chicago. I’ve been blessed with some pretty great jobs thus far. It would be pretty hard to top my job as Web Director for Chronicle Books, a position that allowed me to peruse gorgeous art, design, cooking, pop culture, and travel books every day. And before that, my role as Senior Editor for HOW allowed me to discover new designers, learn design history, and travel all over writing, researching, and spreading the good word of HOW.
But working on my own has been pretty great on its own. I’ve scored some pretty fantastic clients, including my alma mater Chronicle, mystery writer Sara Paretsky, Harper Collins San Francisco, Ark Wiley & Jobson (a San Francisco-based immigration law firm), Pilates-Pro, a site commemorating the 30th anniversary of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and writing for MomFinds (a style and shopping blog for new mothers), HOW magazine, and The Artist's Magazine. My favorite kind of work is writing about design and developing Web sites for authors.
My favorite Web sites to build are for authors, as it merges my love of and experience in publishing with my passion for Web design.
