Tennessee-born Linda Lappin, poet, novelist, and essayist, teaches American culture and language at the University of Rome La Sapienza and makes her home in a medieval Italian villlage where she resides in a 13th century pentagonal house. Her first novel The Etruscan (2004, Wynkin deWorde, Galway, Ireland) received high critical acclaim and was semifinalist for the Three Oaks Fiction Award from Story Line Press. Her second novel, Katherine's Wish (2008, Wordcraft of Oregon) based on the life of Katherine Mansfield, was awarded the gold medal in historical fiction in the 2009 IPPY Awards, honorable mention in the 2009 Eric Hoffer Book Awards for fiction, and was a finalist for the 2008 ForeWord Book of the Year award in fiction. She has twice been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Her essay on expatriate life in Italy, Anxieties of Otherness won first prize in the 2009 Transitions Abroad Expatriate Writers Contest. She holds an MFA from the University of Iowa. Her forthcoming books include: Signatures in Stone, a mystery novel set in the Monster Park of Bomarzo, Italy, inspired by the writings of Mary Butts and The Genius Loci: A Writer's Guide to Capturing the Soul of Place focusing on place, memory and the craft of writing. Her new project is The Diary of JH, based on the life of Modigliani's wife, the artist Jeanne Hébuterne.
She was previously nominated for a Pushcart prize for her biographical essay on Hébuterne published in The Literary Review. She is a member of the Authors Guild and of the Katherine Mansfield Society.
She teaches literary travel /memoir writing to American students of the USAC study abroad program hosted by the University of Tuscia. Since 2005, she has been directed the creative writing program of Centro Pokkoli, an independent cultural association in Italy organizing creative writing workshops for private teachers and institutions, including The Kenyon Review, Peter Selgin, and Alimentum Literary Journal.
