I have swum with dolphins, sea lions, octopus and sharks. I have hitchhiked from Paris to Madrid, along the way sleeping on park benches and being dropped off in the middle of nowhere - in the pouring rain - in the middle of the night - when I shunned the advances of French truckers. I have traveled the length and breadth of Wales, climbing up and down every tower in every castle and ruin I could find, and concentrating very hard to avoid running the left side of the car into a wall, bush or ditch. (left turns are easy, right turns are hard). I have waited outside an operating room for nine hours, murmering like a mantra, "He does five of these a week," while the upper half of my child's spine was fused. I have watched her survive, thrive and grow to a beautiful and bright young woman.
And, as Michelangelo said, "I am still learning." - or more likely, he said "etiam eruditio."
As a writer, I come from a tradition of journalism, having spent ten years as a reporter on daily newspapers. However, my reading interests range from Alice in Wonderland to V.S. Pritchett, Nadine Gordimer and Mikhail Bulgakov.
Currently I am working on a piece of adult fiction titled "Family Phantoms" which is a departure from the children's nonfiction and journalism I've published up to now.
