where the writers are
Howl (after Allen Ginsberg)

Unlike Ginsberg,
I saw the best generations of my mind destroyed by madness
starving, hysterical, naked
loitering through the streets of Harlem, DC, Detroit
searching for intelligence in abandon houses
searching for the president of Columbia Presbeterian Hospital
searching for the silent witnesses, the silent majority
welcoming love-like suicide when expecting only love
now there are hands that smack, now there are hands that strangle
now there are hands that shove, now there are hands that smother
so this is what it means to be a woman, so these are the hands that hug me
so these are the hands that hold me, so these are the hands that fuck me
who waits for her friends to call to see if the third degree burns
left any marks, to ask what she lost in the fire,
dignity, respect, hope for humanity
who waits for her sorrors to call and see if she is still standing
and whether her head is bowed now, whether it is tilted to the side
or whether she can still hold her head high
who waits for her enemies to call to say thank you for a job well done,
we couldn't have done it any better, is there anything that we can do for you
a gun, a chain, a rope, a chamber, a knife, a river, a bridge
who waits for her family to come home to the truth
this is what really happened and this is why we let you wallow in disbelief
in distruth, in dishonesty, in disarray, in dismay, in discovery
we thought it would be healtiher for you to find out on your own
we thought it would be safer for you to figure out for your self
we were scared shitless and we didn't know what to do
we did our best
who waits for the men in her life to come to her aid
a father, an uncle, a grandfather, a brother, an inlaw, a friend,
a coworker, a cohort, a neighbor, a classmate, a poet
a writer, an activist, a teacher, a someone
a somehow to come with aid or explanation
well actually did it leave any marks, well actually I hit my wife, well actually
I don't think it's wrong, well actually an open palm is best, well actually
you are strong enough to take it, well actually you asked for it,
well actually you put yourself in the situation, well actually
I thought you liked it
well this is why we couldn't save you from the men that call you
well this is why we couldn't save you from the men that call you
well this is why we couldn't save you from the men that call you
well this is why we couldn't save you from ourselves
well this is why we couldn't save you from your self
well this is why you must save yourself
waiting for love when only silence is there.
