I have been a sales person most of my life. In order to take any product idea from the mind to the marketplace - it was my chosen mission to tell my story and show my product idea whenever, and wherever I could.
This involved exposing myself to the world - which, in turn, resulted, often than not, being open to criticism and judgment by others.
Whenever I would be shunned or rejected during a sales presentation – I would leave the meeting feeling absolutely devastated. I was, after all, my product. The product’s story was my story. When my product was rejected, I was rejected.
As months turned into years, I coped with rejection very badly. When a buyer loved my product and an order was forthcoming– I celebrated, rejoiced and my courage restored. When a buyer rejected my product and was politely indifferent to my genuine enthusiasm and passion – I retreated to my hotel room and licked my wounds like an injured cat.
Then one day some information was shared with me that instantly changed my life forever.
" 20% of people love you for who you are; your traits, personality, quirks and idiosyncrasies.
20% of people dislike you for exactly the same reasons; your traits, personality, quirks and idiosyncrasies.
And 60% of people just don’t give a damn."
What a relief. It wasn’t only me that was disliked, shunned and discarded at times. It is simply a matter of percentages.
I now approach life in such a different way. The pressure to be liked has been replaced with the ability to accept the good with the bad while relaxing in the knowledge that you can't be all things to all people at all times.
So I am sharing this information with you – a gift from someone who is in your 20% of people who care about you.
