Whenever I’m feeling down about the steady stream of rejection letters that flow my way, some with helpful advice, some with praise but no contract, some as curt as a scrawled “not for me” on the title page, with or without exclamation marks, I think of the words of novelist John Barth:
“The key to the treasure is the treasure.”
As much as I’d like to be published, it’s the writing that’s key. Writing every day sustains and delights me, perhaps all of us, whether we’re unpublished, published, or basking in a Top Ten list.
Of course, however shiny the key, I wouldn’t mind a little treasure now and then. I’m just sayin’.
