DEAD MEN'S HATS
Blog Post by Len Boswell - Jun.03.2010 - 5:33 am
I wear the hats of dead men, vintage fedoras all, from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, short-brimmed and wide, brown, gray, black, tan, green, navy blue, in fact, any hue, some fine felted fur from the bellies of beavers, some wool or straw, each bearing names of classic hatters—Stetson, Mallory, Cavanagh, Bailey, Dobbs, Adam, Biltmore, Churchill, to name a few—some in better shape than others, finger stained, dimpled by moths, crushed in storage, stretched to fit heads too big for the size, but all the hats of dead men who lived and loved and died. I am the caretaker of dead men’s hats, yes.

I remember when hat's were the norm.
Interesting collection...In the photos of all my uncles, dad and grandfather - all are wearing hats.
My first job interview necessitated wearing hat and gloves.
Hats of dead men...there's a story in there somewhere.
A story in there somewhere, perhaps many
What got me started was a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the Atlanta Police Department's homicide squad, whose detectives earn the right to wear a fedora after their first collar. At least one author has used them as the basis for a mystery, calling them "the hat squad" in her book.
Intrigued
O.K. so having been married to a cop for 20 years - who spent much time in the detective bureau, I had to check out Atlanta PD. Apparently the "Hat Squad" is considered very elite.
The first fedoras are usually black, sometimes brown, almost always made of fine, soft fur felt. They wear Stetson and Dobbs, - a wee bit familiar, eh?
Wee bit
I have many a Dobbs and Stetson, black, brown, and gray.
I hear you, man. Do you
I hear you, man. Do you visit www.thefedoralounge.com ?
I have hats from the 40s, 50s and sixties. I have an old J. C. Penney hat xxxx Beaver that is probably better than anything offered on today's market.
Lounge
Yes, I frequent the Fedora Lounge and cruise Ebay for vintage hats. You're right, the old hats are far superior.
I can't do hats
but I envy those who can carry it off. Apparently you can. My hat's off to you.
Hats off
