Some of you may know I wrote and co-produced the 20th Anniversary of the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
I was so delighted to re-visit that great time and great show in this brief article for AOL's PopEater. The clips are just the best.
It was a dream job -- getting paid to watch all 168 episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and pick the best moments for a TV special. I was head of development for Jack Haley, Jr. in 1990 when execs from 'MTM' and CBS decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the show. Jack asked me to write and co-produce. We had two months to create the special.
Magic happened from the start. In a showbiz miracle, all seven remaining cast members had the same two days available. Mary, Ed Asner, Valerie Harper, Gavin MacLeod, Cloris Leachman, Betty White, and Georgia Engel had not been together as a group for 13 years. (Ted Knight passed away in 1986.) We decided the TV special would mirror the event -- a reunion of dear friends coming together to watch "home movies" of their good times gone by.
Jack volunteered his home as the shoot location, "feminized" with pillows, flowers, paintings. The finishing touch was the "M" -- the one that hung in Mary's sitcom apartment all seven years. She'd long ago lost the hat she threw in the air in the opening credits, but the "M" was her treasure. Mary's assistant hand-carried it to LA for the special and hung it above Jack's fireplace. Like I said, magic.

By the way, Gina Misiroglu of Red Room put me in touch with PopEater/AOL people, which is just one of the great ways she's getting attention for Red Room's authors.
