The Moment I Was Called A Stupid Bitch: I was invited to write a guest post for a popular blog. I chose to write about one of my pet subjects; well, maybe pet peeve is more like it. I wrote about the misogynistic practices of the New York Times Book Review. Much of what I wrote focused on how it’s fine to be a literary review vehicle, but since the NYTBR at that time had regular roundups of specific commercial genres, like Sci-Fi and Mystery in particular, it looked a little peculiar that they’d never done the same for Romance. Really, I covered a lot of ground and mostly – I hope – with a sense of humor. The post got a lot of praise. At the time, I wasn’t the only one calling attention to gender inequities in the NYTBR. There had been scholarly studies counting up the number of reviewer and reviewed by gender in each issue and those numbers only confirmed what anyone not in denial could already see. The NYTBR, certainly the NYTBR of 2005, skewed male. As I say, there was a lot of praise for what I wrote. But there were a few detractors too. One high-profile woman wrote something to the effect that, “That stupid bitch is just upset they won’t review her shitty little books.” Ah, well. Can’t please everyone.
