The Moment I Realized How Silly It All Is: So there I was at the Connecticut Book Awards, having not won. Despite my words about it “just being great to be nominated!,” I was feeing a little glum. Then I went upstairs, where the cocktail party/book-signing was supposed to take place. An acquaintance whose spouse had been nominated for another award tried to corral me with, “Come over here and join the losers!” That’s when it hit me how ridiculous it all was. I wasn’t about to sit around and be bitter. So instead I hit the bar for wine, several times, and then I cheerfully sat down to do my signing beside a bitter poet.
