Cars started arriving at the entrance doors. Visitors were dressed at their finest – long beaded white dresses and charcoal black suits matched with expensive footwear. Roses dyed in lavender filled the dome with colors that harmonized the event’s motif. Luxurious decorations were in perfect places. Then, the star of the show arrived. She was draped in a long satin gown embroidered with laces and sequences. Her face was covered with a semi-transparent veil that was attached to her hair running all the way down to her chest. She looked dashing but behind the marital covering were eyes of confusion.
At the age of 17, 13 days before her debut, Bianca stood in front of the church doors holding a bouquet in one hand and a rosary on the other. Beside her was her father who will accompany her during her walk on the aisle. Bianca looked at the altar and she gazed intently on the naked man on the cross. Her gaze turned to the other man in a black tuxedo standing near the first pew. Tears started forming at the bottom of her eyes. She quickly looked away to prevent what could have been a dramatic scene on her wedding day but she couldn’t help herself. She wasn’t ready to give up her freedom but she had no other choice. She was carrying the child of her groom.
Bianca and Josh started out as members of a dance troop. They got to know each other better when their group passed the auditions for a local competition. They became close friends and eventually lovers. One of their dates ended up at a room in a pension house. After months of delay, Bianca finally found out that she was pregnant. As teenagers, abortion was the first option but they thought that telling their parents instead would make them less sinful and so they did. The news came as a big shock to both families and in order to prevent maximum humiliation, marriage was seen as the remedy. Those panoramas flashed before Bianca. She wanted to lift the skirts of her gown, rush outside and leave yet she felt nailed to the ground. Her father lightly held her right hand and placed it on his arms. The choir’s solemn voice filled the church and the grand march began.
The newly-weds settled in with Bianca’s family. Josh continued his studies and was offered a job at a travel agency after graduation. At first, everything went smoothly. Few months after Bianca gave birth, she and Josh started having fights and more often than not it was about financial matters. Not a single cent out of Josh’s paycheck went to Bianca and during those times she’d run to her parents just to buy her son’s milk. Their misunderstandings lasted for days and they ignored each other everytime. Their relationship went from unmanageable to irreparable until one day, Bianca went for an errand and she failed to return home.
Bianca’s leaving was not unplanned. For several times, she had consulted her parents about the idea of divorce. Bianca knew their relationship was beyond repair and she left just before it destroys her as well. She had the choice between working things out with her husband and traveling out of their city in the hope of providing her son a better future and herself a better life.
Josh moved back with his parents but their son remained with Bianca’s. Bianca stayed away as far as possible from home. Days turned to weeks and weeks to months but she never even gave a call. Finally after 2 years, she went home on her son’s birthday. She knew her parents were furious for she left without a word and she came back wasted, unredeemed and again, pregnant.
For she was less of a diploma, being a waitress in a coffee shop was the closest occupation a woman of her stature could get. She met Clyde, a temporary messenger for a business firm who was older than her. They constantly saw each other during non-working days, fell in-love and lived together. Clyde flew to Turkey after discovering that he would be a father. Bianca decided to go home when she realized all he left him was a promise of uncertainty.
Josh had mixed emotions when Bianca told her everything but in the end, he forgave her infidelity and accepted her without anger nor disdain including the child in her womb. Even though they never fixed their marriage, Josh continued supporting her financially and emotionally. They became the best of friends. When she gave birth to her second son, Josh never left her side at the hospital. When she finally woke up, he gathered all his courage to ask her why she left. She answered, “Because you changed and I realized that my love wasn’t enough to change you back.” He sighed and then she asked him, “Why did you accept me even if you know things wouldn’t go back to how they were before?” He smiled and said, “Because love is strong enough to endure any change.”
