Kitty Kelley has been honored by her professional peers with such awards as the Outstanding Author Award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and she has been selected as a member ofVanity Fair Hall of Fame. As she does with all her nonfiction, Ms. Kelley plans to interview hundreds of sources, many of whom have never before spoken on the record about her subject. There has never been a serious biography written about Oprah Winfrey, and Ms. Kelley plans to write a thoroughly researched and detailed book about Ms. Winfrey’s life and her place in our cultural history.
“Oprah Winfrey has fascinated me for many years – as a woman, she has wielded an unprecedented amount of influence over the American culture and psyche. There has been no other person in the twentieth century whose convictions and values have impacted the American public in such a significant way,” says Ms. Kelley. “She has built an empire around her personality and has been one of American’s most admired business women and philanthropists. Oprah's story is one of hope, promise and realization of the American dream.”
Ms. Frost says: “We are proud to have someone of Kitty Kelley’s journalistic stature writing about one of the most fascinating and powerful women of our time. We know that Kitty will bring new insight to a woman whom we all truly admire. She will take us from her highly public life to the side of Oprah that we don’t see on television. There could not be a more dynamic combination of author and subject.”
Wayne Kabak, of the William Morris Agency in New York, represented Kitty Kelley in her discussions with Crown and Larry Kirshbaum of LJK Literary Management served as marketing consultant for the project. Peter Gethers, Vice President, Editor-At-Large, Random House, Inc., will edit the book.
