I never thought that the internet could make the big world out there seem a little smaller until I came across an email from a friend I haven't spoken with in a little over 15 years. We were good friends in high school and we tried very hard to maintain a friendship in college, but once the responsibilities of paying college debt became a reality, we kind of lost touch. She wound up finding me on one of the social networks and we've gotten reaquainted.
The funny part about the whole thing is that she's finding all of these articles on the internet that I've me written over the years, and wants to read the book I just finished writing for NaNo. She loves romance and all and she'd probably be a good person to give it to just to see if others would like it, but she wants to read it now and it's by no means even edited for a first draft-- let alone a final one.
This gal was a very good friend of mine and I know she'd look past the mistakes and all, but I've never even let my own mother read anything of mine unless it was in the finishing stages. So how can I let her read a "naked" story? I don't know about that.
This whole funny situation got me thinking about some other writers that I've known over the years. I know some of them are the same and wouldn't let anyone, including their own mother, look at anything unless it was finished. But some of the writers I knew were different and were willing to share no matter what.
So now my interest has peaked about this subject again and I truly wonder if I'm just weird or I'm just particular about my craft. Of course, I could also be crazy too. But I think we already went over that lol!
