International Board on Books for Young People

Today is International Children's Book Day http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=269 so I've made two of my e-books available for free through the Kindle Select Program for the day (until midnight Pacific Standard Time.) http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&field-author=Uguisse%20Packard&page=1&rh...

I've also looked into the organization that started this day: International Board on Books for Young People. http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&field-author=Uguisse%20Packard&page=1&rh...

It gives out the Hans Christian Andersen Awards every other year. http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=287

It has an honour list of recent children's books meeting its criteria of excellence. http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=270    Important considerations in selecting the Honour List titles are that the books are representative of the best in children's literature from the country and that the books are suitable for publication throughout the world. It provides insight into the diverse cultural, political and social settings in which children live and grow and it can be used by all those involved with developing educational and literacy programmes and publishing initiatives to develop exemplary “international” collections. (excerpt 1)  Permanent collections of the IBBY Honour List books are kept at the International Youth Library in Munich, the Swiss Institute for Child and Youth Media in Zurich, Bibiana Research Collection in Bratislava, at IBBY in Tokyo an Northwestern University Library at Evanston, Illinois.  (excerpt 2)

I was surprised to learn that it is represented in many countries, currently 77. http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=255

It publishes a quarterly magazine called Bookbird: A Journal of International Children's Literature (ISSN 0006 7377).  http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=1035   http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/bookbird/  Two issues have been selected for translation into Japanese. http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=1029
