Mark Brokaw, the Program Chair of Yale’s Institute for Musical Theater has announced the selection of two plays for their summer workshop. One of them is Scotty’s and Alana’s Mortality Play. Here’s the official report:http://drama.yale.edu/YIMT/index.html
Readers of my poetry already know Scotty, who earned his MFA from NYU last spring. I’ve posted “Transitions,” where he works at the piano before high school, on my website on Red Room.
This will be the third time I’ve seen Mortality Play, for which Scotty wrote the music along with Alana Jacoby, who wrote the book and lyrics. I saw it as one of the two plays he wrote for graduation from Tisch and a second time last year when it was in a festival in New York; the first time I saw it I cried. The music at the end still brings tears to my eyes, and the chant that starts it out is catchy enough I heard people humming it on the way out of the theater. I blogged the last time I saw it: Mortality Play at Festival
