We have an “invisible fence” around our property that keeps Ava in, so she’s only comfortable leaving the property in the car. Almost every day she and I take a two-minute drive to the trailhead for some horse-trails and remote country lanes.
THE DRIVEWAY (see photo) We can see most of the houses from the trails / lanes, but one house is set so far back that all we can see is the driveway. It’s surrounded by two cathedrals of second-growth redwood trees and has large sculptures alongside, a secluded lane of its own.
I’d always wondered who lived there until recently, when I’ve gotten to know the owner as he comes and goes. I’ll omit his name for privacy, but he’s both a surgeon who spent a career reconstructing ears and is also a successful sculptor. One out of every 7,500 children is born with an ear missing or misshapen, and traumatic injuries to ears by burns, dog bites and auto accidents are common. The medical terms are microtia and Atresia. Families have tracked him down from as far away as Peru and Australia. He’s recently retired from his doctoring, but these two “Youtubes” show the amazing work he did for years.
