Sometimes fan mail is more than just complimentary, as I recently found out. A woman who had read The Third Wish sent a lovely note to tell me how much she enjoyed the story and wanted to know which book to read next. The Genie's Curse is the next book in the series so, of course, I passed the information along with thanks for the fact that she took the time to write to me. Then I got another note from her.
Oh-oh, I thought. Now that she's softened me up, she may have 'suggestions' for what I should do with the continuing characters in the book. I've gotten mail like that before and, while I always take the suggestions to heart -- it's actually helpful to hear from readers how my characters are perceived; which are liked or disliked for which characteristics -- I can't change what's been written. I have gotten those suggestions before: "But you should have let so-and-so do such-and-such. I think she would have enjoyed that." That type of input is so thrilling because it tells me that the reader is caught like a bee feasting on dribbled popsicle juice...a sweet, steady supply of entertainment. But I also understand that the bee will be disappointed when it realizes its little insect feet are stickily stuck and I can't pluck it from its expectations. I can, however, provide more popsicle juice.
I digress. The reader's suggestion, in fact, was extremely helpful. She wanted me to make sure other readers knew that they can download Amazon Kindle books even if they don't have a Kindle!! I didn't even know that. I've had a Kindle since the moment they first came out and I love it. Three of my books are digital only, prompting many potential readers to ask, "But how can I read it if I don't have a Kindle." Here's the answer. You can download the free Kindle software from Amazon and read any of the Kindle books on your PC, Blackberry, iPhone, or iPad. Genies are pretty magical, but THAT is amazing. Welcome to my world. --Kellyann
