Magic Trick
birthday candle.jpg

In honor of my 52nd birthday and National Poetry Month, I decided to try my hand at a villanelle.

Today a candle burns for me somewhere

With a flame that is hot from wax to wick.

Wish, breathe, wish, pray, cross your fingers, breathe, blow.

A child’s rite of passage floats in the air

On a smoky trail that disappears quick.

Today a candle burns for me somewhere.

Do those my age, these days, play truth or dare?

Or games like Jacks, Old Maid, or pick-up sticks?

Wish, breathe, wish, pray, cross your fingers, breathe, blow.

The clock tick tocks as I pluck a gray hair

Strong and wiry, with many more coarse and thick.

Today a candle burns for me somewhere.

A glimpse in the mirror captures a rare

Smile from my youth, easy and nostalgic.

Wish, breathe, wish, pray, cross your fingers, breathe, blow.

Strains of “Happy Birthday” sung soft and spare

As I look for more than a magic trick.

Today a candle burns for me somewhere.

Wish, breathe, wish, pray, cross your fingers, breathe, blow.

I was hoping we'd see a birthday blog post out of you! In fact, I almost wrote you a note last night, in hopes of encouraging it - but apparently, I didn't need to!

Cheers to another year full of great adventures, poetry that strikes a chord, fulfillment, and everything else that makes you stronger and happier! You're one in a million!

Thanks Morgan. . .

I've not been able to write for so many reasons, so I promised myself that I would do "something" for my birthday.  You might like to know that the villanelle comes from the French style of poetry.  This was my first attempt and I don't think I quite got the meter, I did stick to the nineteen line highly perscribed form.  And I kept my promise to myself. . . thanks for cheering me on.

Villanelle

It's a complicated style - lots of rules. Is this your first attempt? If so, it's a great start. But why/how did you choose it?

Regardless, I was just glad to see a post from you - and poetry, at that! A great way to start off a new year!
