Thanks to Red Room and executive editor Gina Misiroglu I placed a second piece on www.mydaily.com. Here is an excerpt and you can read the article in entirety by following the link at the end of this post. Three cheers to the Red Room community and the opportunities to write, everyday.
To tell you the truth, I wasn't really paying attention to all the hype around Harold Camping's assertion that the holy rapture was upon us, set for May 21, 2011. I'd known that the Mayan calendar predicted the world would end on December 21, 2012, so I just figured someone got their dates mixed up, or their religions. It's easy to do. I've been guilty of it my entire life.
My grandmother was a devout and stoic Catholic. She never missed a mass unless she was ill, called my mother every Sunday to make sure we had attended church, and sent away for sacred bits of cloth laminated on holy cards and sanctioned by the Pope. She tested my knowledge of the rosary, and on my first communion gave me my very own prayer book.
As kids, if we missed mass, my sister and I would stage a ceremony in our bedroom taking turns at being the priest. We had no idea how blasphemous that ritual was, and I'm sure it took us out of the running for being beamed up to the heavens decades later. At least I guess that's the case, because we're still here.
