Katie Sulkowski is the summation of her family roots. Half Southern belle, one-fourth Sicilian layperson, and one-fourth Polish princess. With this eclectic family tradition comes a cache of gifted ancestors who haunt her writing; whether it is a Wildheart Guide, website copy, poetry, or collections of personal essay prose.
Born in Nashville, TN, as the fourth Katherine, "Katie" decided to break tradition at the ripe age of 12, and attended a school not to her Southern Belle grandmother, Mimi's, liking. This, a pivotal moment in Katherine history, was the consequence of being from a long line of strong, independent women. Carving her own path was simply her destiny and, in the words of Etta James, a thrill she could put her cheek to. Katie's parents are painters and through their artistic perspective, added to her a unique upbringing spent in naturally-lit art studios, chic art galleries, and on plein-air painting trips to Grand Cayman and Vermont. Katie wrote short stories and personal essays all through out her life, but at age 20 she chose her passion for writing over art, and decided to pursue writing full-time. Since 2000, she's published in several magazines and news print publications and completed two nonfiction books, a biography about her father titled Master & Hounds (Brushfire, 2003) and Wildheart Guide to Womanhood: 20-something advice for the next generation of girls (releasing in 2009). An alumni of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Katie holds a BA degree in English with a focus on Creative Writing. While at CU, she won the Javonovich Award and small stipend for her poetry The Day, This Day. Today, several years working in the book publishing industry, Katie is a literary agent, and author. In her studio at home, she composes while Daysi, the world's smallest Boston terrier, sleeps in her lap. She resides in Nashville, TN, and enjoys the vibrant art and literary community there.
