Kathy Ruckerʼs first play, Beautiful Scar, was a finalist for the Heideman Award at the 2004 Humana Festival Ten-Minute Play Contest. It had its premier reading in London in September 2011, produced by the Miscellany Theatre. Her next play, Chop Shop, earned her an invitation to the Sewanee Writers Conference at the University of the South where she developed the play with Romulus Linney and Dan OʼBrien.
In 2004/2005, she was a member of the San Francisco Bay Area theatre company, Playground.
In 2008, she completed a full-length, six-character play titled Sultanʼs Battery. This play was selected for participation in the Great Plains Theatre Conference in Omaha, Nebraska in May 2009 and also the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in June 2009. Sultanʼs Battery was a finalist in the New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest. In 2010 the play was nominated for the London Fringe Festival Theatre Writing Award and had its world premier in 2010 in Los Angeles, produced by the Fresh Baked Theatre Company.
In 2010 Ms. Ruckerʼs play, Turing Tested, was selected for participation in the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez, Alaska. In 2013 her play, Done There, Been That, was produced at the Bierkeller Theatre in Bristol, England, directed by Natasha Harper-Smith.
In the summer of 2013, Tracy Ward directed a staged reading of Rucker’s most recent play, Crystal Springs, at the Z Space Theatre in San Francisco.
Kathy Rucker is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, with a degree in French and Art History. Prior to her career in the theater she was a TV commercial producer.
