What could trump reading a wonderful novel by a great novelist? Well, reading with a dog draped across your lap. Here is our Lord Byron in lapdom while my husband reads Amitov Ghosh's THE SEA OF POPPIES. He's been a huge Ghosh fan since he read SHADOWLINES. This novel is thumbs up, too. Lord Byron does not need to read any novels. He knows all he needs to know. Our old dog Arjun is already legendary and worthy of a Ghosh novel. Pooja is---who knows? We think maybe part coyote? How could we work her into a Ghosh or Divakaruni or Desai novel? It might be fun to try. DOG is not our co-pilot. DOG is our reading companion. Our competitor for bed pillow. Our sofa softie. Our spirit guide. Or guides, as the case may be. With five, it's hard to know who's in charge.
