Our poem-tag began the day after Inauguration Day. Since both of us had been underwhelmed by the Inaugural Poem, we wrote our own, sending our poems to each other, and then we started riffing from each other's work. Our riffs took us in unexpected, sometimes bizarre, and emotionally moving directions. We drew it to a close last week with poems that pulled us back to Obama's inauguration. With what amounts to a chapbook manuscript, now we are revising a bit and thinking about what to do next. No matter what that is, we have re-invigorated our friendship, as well as our poetry. Two different poetic voices coming together! Two friends realizing how much they cross-pollinate each other's imagination. Come to think of it, though, this began 32 years ago when we met at a workshop in Virginia with A.R. Ammons. One of us New/New Jersey born and bred, the other raised on a farm in SW Georgia. Thanks be to poetry, to the friendship it has sustained between us! (Photo: Penelope with Lily, from Poemeleon e-zine)
