This Saturday I attended the Blue Ridge Book & Author Showcase in Hendersonville, NC. Honorary Chairman was Robert Morgan, an old friend from my MFA days at UNCG and author of many books of poetry, fiction, and prose, among them GAP CREEK, an Oprah selection. This event reminded me yet again of how important it is to bring writers and readers together on a regular basis. Good for the authors to see each other again. Good for the readers to see some of their favorite authors in the flesh and have them sign books. I have gone to only one AWP convention. Too big, too noisy, too anonymous. These regional book fairs and festivals are more to my taste. I like the friendliness of them, the lack of schmoozing (well, not a total lack...), and the value placed on the one to one communication between writers and readers. After my reading I had a little time to say hello to Bob Morgan and remember our student days so many years (nope, not telling how many) ago.
