Belgrade-I met Jovan in some beer hall near the hostel one night, through a friend of Dominic. He was clearly crazed. Or something. I couldn’t tell exactly. His dark green eyes never relaxed and held multi-levels of pain so deep I doubt even he understood what was wrong with him…but no matter. He was a writer for the largest newspaper in Serbia, Politika, and was going to Kosovo to write a story on the pre-independence climate. We started talking about it, Kosovo, and I suddenly found myself agreeing to go with him. Serb and American together in Kosovo. We both knew it. It was too good. Through our “grand adventure,” which was how we were referring to it, we would give a proverbial fuck you to nationality and ethnicity and go hang out together “downstairs” and make as many “grand formalities” as possible with as many Albanians as were willing....
