Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought to yourself what it would be like if you could get rid of wrinkles, unwanted facial blemishes, facial hair, or imperfections and have a smooth, even, skin tone and a refreshed, rejuvenated look to your face? Do you have a tattoo that you really wish you could get rid of now because it isn’t cool anymore or you’ve just outgrown having it? And those issues that many women think about – excess fat deposits, mostly around our thighs and abdomens that typically follow childbirth; extra padding that we would really like to reduce or eliminate? What about moles, birthmarks, or skin imperfections that you have had for a long time, possibly since birth or early childhood that makes you feel self-conscious about yourself? Do you have a condition such as allergies, snoring, or sleep apnea that you would really like to have treated to enhance your quality of life and overall wellbeing? These are just a few of the issues that Dr. Armen Serebrakian, MD addresses at his practice, Bay Area Laser Surgery Center.

One of the newest procedures offered at the Bay Area Laser Surgery Center is the Contour Thread Liftä. The Contour Thread Liftä is a safe and effective procedure that offers subtle, natural-looking results. It does not replace a conventional facelift; instead, it offers patients an innovative, minimally invasive approach to achieving facelift-like results.
Background: As we begin to age, our skin tissue thins due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers. The results are typically viewed as sagging, deep creases, folds, and wrinkles that tend to appear at some point in your thirties. In general, the best candidates for the Contour ThreadLiftä are men and women in their thirties to sixties who desire a more dramatic and longer-lasting effect than fillers and botulinum toxin or other related treatments, but do not want a full face or brow lift procedure performed. Eligible patients, who choose the Contour ThreadLiftä will benefit in the following areas – lift sagging eyebrows, adjust asymmetric brows, reposition sagging cheeks, lift drooping soft tissues of the mid and lower face, and smooth out premature skin aging.
How is the Contour Thread Liftä performed? - The process utilizes patented Contour Threadsä which are the first non-absorbable barbed sutures cleared for marketing by the FDA for lifting the sagging contours of the brow, midface, and neck areas. Unlike conventional sutures which are smooth, Contour Threadsä have tiny barbs or cogs and are made of clear polypropylene, so they are not visible under fair or thin skins. Polypropylene is a material that has been safely used in the body for many years in medical devices.
How do Contour Threadsä work? - The physician makes a tiny incision in the temporal (at or near the temples) area and the Contour Threadsä are inserted under the patients’ skin. The tiny barbs on each thread open in an umbrella-like fashion to form a support structure that gently lifts sagging tissues of the brow, face, and neck. Once in position, your body generates new collagen bundles that encapsulate each thread to help maintain the elevation or “lifting effect.”
How long will it take? What about recovery? How soon can I return to my normal activities? - The procedure is quick and is usually performed under local anesthesia. If you desire, light intravenous sedation is available. The actual length of time required for your procedure depends on the total number of threads used, however, on average, a typical procedure takes approximately 60 minutes and in most cases, four threads are the minimum needed to address moderate sagging of one facial area. Recovery typically is very quick and patients can return to work and normal activities within a few days to a week.
How long will the Contour Thread Liftä last? - The duration of results typically lasts from three to five years or more, depending on the age of the patient at the time of the procedure, the individual degree of sagging, and the number threads used. Additionally, this procedure is an ideal complement to other facial rejuvenation techniques including botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, or peels and laser therapy. Chin augmentation and liposuction can also be done in conjunction with a Contour ThreadLiftä. This technique is entirely reversible and unwanted effects, in most cases, are easily corrected under local anesthesia.
Another popular procedure is Thermage’â - Non-Abrasive Face/Neck Tissue Tightening as seen on the Oprah show. Thermage’â provides skin tightening and contouring results without surgery. It is the only non-invasive treatment that delivers tighter skin, renewed facial contours, and healthier collagen, the building block that provides structure to your skin.
What exactly is it? - The Thermage’â procedure employs a patented radiofrequency (RF) technology called ThermaCoolâ, that has been clinically proven to tighten and gently lift skin to smooth out wrinkles and renew facial contours. The procedure is fast and incision-free, can be performed on all skin types, and allows you the flexibility to return to normal activities right away following your treatment.
How does it work? - The ThermaCoolâ device uses a sophisticated treatment tip called ThermaTipâ that delivers a controlled amount of RF energy. With each touch to the skin, the ThermaTipâ device uniformly heats a large volume of collagen in the deeper layers of the skin and its underlying tissue while simultaneously protecting the outer layer of the skin with cooling. This method causes deep structures in your skin to immediately tighten and over time, new and remodeled collagen is produced to tighten your skin even more.
