How have I never read this before? I get the sense that this is one of those pieces that everyone else has stumbled across at some point, and recognized themselves in it, and then shared it with their loved ones, knowing they too would like to look in that mirror, and somehow I was bypassed. So, it’s days like these when I’m infinitely grateful for the internet, where a casual click takes me somewhere I never expected to go this afternoon—skating through New York City with Joan Didion in her twenties. (Thanks Slate’s Kara Hadge.)
For those of you, who like me, somehow missed this wonderful 1967 Didion piece called “Goodbye to All That” which is as timely now, as it must have been forty years ago, no need to feel left out. Just click and enjoy.
