I began writing poetry in high school. In my senior year, I won the New Jersey Audubon Society essay contest. My first poem was not published until 1981, a year after I graduated. At Atlantic Community College in New Jersey, I started a literary journal called Silhouettes, and continued it until I left. In 1982, I was briefly employed with the South Jersey Advisor newspaper, as a sales- person/writer. While at the newspaper, I wrote original articles, did rewrites, and sold subscriptions.
Into the late 80’s, after arriving in California, I joined a writing group, and participated in local readings in Solano County. My gift of writing poetry kicked into high gear in the 1990’s.
By 2001, I started the first poetry reading in Barnes and Noble Booksellers in Fairfield, CA. Other readings and opportunities in poetry followed.
By 2003, I published an inspirational poetry/music CD called Soul Stirrings. The music was mixed and recorded by Marc Pieruccini, whose work has been associated with artists such as Whitney Houston.
In 2004-2005, I branched out into other areas, including Sonoma County. I became the Sonoma County Library Slam Champion in 2005, in the library’s 5th year of slam poetry contests.
It was in 2006-2008, that I achieved high status as a published poet, with poetry in journals such as Rattlesnake Review and Blue Collar Review. I also garnered several contest awards. I became a fixture in the Sonoma County literary scene and joined Redwood Writers, another mainstay of Sonoma County. I created and hosted UniverSoul, an open mike reading series at The Barking Dog cafe, in Boyes Springs
In 2009, I published ‘Ritualistic Roses of Ave C’ in the Sonoma Women’s Voices and ‘2 A.M.’ in the SoMa Literary Review. I was well-known for featuring in poetry events all over Sonoma County. Some of the places I read included Healdsburg Literary Guild Third Sunday.
By 2010, I hosted and participated in the Petaluma Poetry of Remembrance Program. I also hosted the Teen Poetry Slam at the Sonoma County Book Festival. Later that same year, I became the first poet laureate for the city of Fairfield, CA.
I have been writing poetry in earnest for 31 years. I have written other things such as articles, scholarships, and essays, but poetry is my first love. Many people are astounded by my transformation from a spoken word poet to poet laureate.
My love affair with words began at age 3, according to my cousins, who claimed I used
“big words” for someone my age. Words are an integral part of who I am; I look forward to many more successes in my writing.
I want to join Redroom to network with other professionals and to advance my writing career.
