Surprises are not always unwelcome or unpleasant. I found out a few weeks ago that my poem “Miss Virginia” has been published in a groundbreaking anthology entitled “Temba Tupu! (Walking Naked): Africana Women’s Poetic Self-Portrait by African World Press Inc. and The Red Sea Press. Miss Virginia was the name of our next door neighbor as I was growing up.
The publisher, Africa World Press, Inc. and Red Sea Press, Inc. is based in New Jersey and has an extensive list of books of diverse genres. As they state, “our mission is to provide high quality literature on the history, culture, politics of Africa and the African Diaspora. You will find that our books enlighten, educate and engage.” I am honored to be included in this book and I’d like to thank our editor, Dr. Nagueyalti Warren, for her vision and hard work in bringing together past, present and future women from the Diaspora in this collection of voices.
