The door to the instant travel machine closed, a red light flashed once and then the door opened again, instantly…
As the door opened, a weird red light flooded the compartment from outside and a wispy red fog blew into the doorway and filled the little chamber. Everyone’s eyes were staring at the sight beyond. There were mountains in the background and a huge red sun was nearly down over them in the far distance. It was getting visibly darker by the minute as everyone watched the sun moving slowly down over the horizon.
“Well, I guess you could say that it was a pretty instantaneous trip,” Burt remarked. Everyone gawked out the open door.
“And you can see that we have definitely gone someplace beside home. We are not in Kansas anymore Toto!” Blinky remarked and everyone laughed, breaking the nervous quiet of the interior.
Millie and Honey were the first to get up from their couch and walk toward the door. Rose was right beside them when they arrived at the steps. The puppies climbed down off their seats and were right behind them looking between the legs of Millie and Honey and Rose.
“W-o-o-o-w! Salazar exclaimed as they all looked at the blue grass in the darkening land beyond the door.
“It looks like we came just at nightfall,” Honey said a little sadly, “We might have missed the day here and will have to wait till tomorrow to go to the amusement park.”
“Not at all,” came a rather English voice from their right. He came toward the machine and into view as they all descended the steps in a rush. “The small red sun that you see setting over the mountains is our night time sun. We have four. One at night, the “Red” one, a binary star in the daytime and then another single medium sized yellow star that carries us through till the red night time star comes back around.
We have almost continual sunshine here, although it is a little darker here at night. Sort of like your full moon as the red star is very far away and provides a lot less light then the double star of our daytime or the even brighter yellow star during the later part of our day.”
Sure enough, as he was speaking, the twilight seemed to be brightening into morning. They all walked around the machine to see the two suns appearing over the horizon in the opposite direction. They all stood stunned as they gaped at the incredible sight of two suns rising over the eastern horizon.
“Oh my!” Millie said, as they watched the suns moving slowly up over the mountainous rollercoaster as the amusement park began to brighten with the first rays of morning sunlight.
“My Name is Sir Thomas Katt,” He said with a deep accent. “I will be your guide while you are here on Catatonia.” And what a cat he was! He stood on his hind legs and walked upright and was nearly as tall as Millie. He had a white belly and it looked like a tiger striped coat lay over his back as the stripes fairly dripped down off his back toward his stomach. He had a regular looking cat’s face, but the hair on his head was parted in the middle and his whiskers were a little bit thicker than normal and were jet black.
“We are pleased to meet you Sir Thomas Katt,” Millie said as she held out her hand in greeting.
Sir Katt’s nose seemed to twitch a little as he looked down his nose at her hand, “Is this your way of greeting? I am afraid that I am not used to this custom. Here we sort of rub our faces together as a greeting. Like so…” He stepped forward as Millie retrieved her hand and he leaned close to her and rubbed his face against the side of hers. She giggled. Then he giggled too.
Sir Thomas Katt rubbed faces with Rose, Honey and all of her puppies as they introduced themselves. Everyone was in a grand mood as they all exchanged greeting. He had to get down on all four feet to reach down to the puppies to rub their faces. After he rose back up on his hind legs again, he addressed Rose, “Well, by the time we get to the amusement park entrance, it will be opening, Miss Rose, so if you will all follow me, and we will begin our day adventure. Shall we?”
Everyone seemed to agree spontaneously with a loud, “YES! YES! YES!” and they all laughed and followed Sir Thomas Katt to the entrance of the amusement park.
Everyone was saucer eyed as they stared around at all the amazing sights from the blue grass to the rides inside the park. All the rides seemed similar to ones on Earth, but had a different theme to them. They entered the park through the front gate area and were handed a map of the park and given little cat collars to wear to ride the rides.
