Millie tossed back the covers and jumped from the bed, as if she was a piece of bread popping out of a toaster. “What are you doing in my bedroom?” She exclaimed.
Startled, Honey jumped back as if she was struck, her legs trembling. A loud banging was heard in the bathroom and sixteen little legs came bounding down the hallway and into the bedroom a second later. Eight little eyes were as big as saucers as they watched Millie collapse on the bed in laughter. She was hysterical as her pealing laughter carried throughout the house.
Honey sat down and lifted a paw to her nose and covered her eyes as she lowered her head near the floor, “You nearly stopped my heart, little Miss. Why on God’s green earth would you do such a thing?”
Millie controlled her laughter enough to climb down off the bed and come over to Honey. She slid down on the floor next to her, putting both arms around her neck. She held Honey’s chin up with one hand as she kissed the side of her face, “Oh Baby, I am so sorry! I was just feeling playful this morning and I couldn’t help myself. Please forgive me?” She hugged Honey tightly as they both began to laugh. Honey licked the side of Millie’s face and then her eyes and ears, as they both laughed and giggled at the joke that Millie played on Honey.
The puppies, seeing that there was no major wrongdoing, realized that their mother was getting all of Millie’s first morning kisses. They jumped into Millie’s lap and clambered all over her in a rush to get some of her loving and petting. They were all talking wildly about wanting some kisses, and about the lake, and all the adventures that they were likely to have during the day. Millie hugged and kissed each puppy as they all laughed and rolled around on the floor.
Millie looked like she was being attacked by a shipment of stuffed toys, as there was not a spot that did not have a yapping ball of fur, jumping and crawling all over her, as she giggled and rolled around with them on the floor. She would push one puppy away and another immediately took its place, licking and jumping on her. The entire house was alive with their squealing, and giggling.
Honey sat back and smiled as she watched them all having fun and enjoying their morning romp. Finally, she asked if they were going to the lake today.
Millie sat up while pushing the pups off her lap and tried to get to her feet. She stared into the eyes of all four pups as they sat back and looked expectantly up, “Oh yes, PLEEEEEASE!” they all began to beg at once. “Please. Please. Please. Lake Please! Lake Please!“ They all began to chorus together.
Almost out of breath from all the tumbling and playing, Millie pushed up off the floor and looked down at the little fur covered faces as they sat giving their best pleading smiles. “Well, I need to get the food from the refrigerator and the picnic basket and a few bottles of water. Have you gotten your towels yet? I heard your momma asking you to get towels. And a few blankets too.” Hands on her hips, she gave them all a big grin, “Well, let’s get to it.”
They all twisted around at once and began slipping and sliding down the hall, in a rush to the bathroom, all of them talking at once about the lake and how wonderful it will be to have a picnic lunch. They talked about how cool and refreshing the water would be in the afternoon heat as they rushed off to retrieve the towels and blankets.
Millie reached down and scratched Honey’s head as she passed, “Well, Honey, let’s not keep your children waiting. After I get dressed, help me get the picnic basket packed and we will be on our way. The sun will be up soon and it is quite a walk through the forest and down the long hill to the lake.” She took off her night gown and laid it on the bed then slipped on a t-shirt and her favorite pair of jeans. She sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled on a pair of anklets and slid her feet into her penny loafers. She looked at the silver 1943D steal pennies that her daddy gave her and smiled. She remembered the day he found them. He told her they were special as he got them both on the same day, and that made them lucky. She remembered him helping her put them in the little windows on the front of her shoes and telling her that they would bring her lots of luck. She then grabbed the bag that she had packed, the night before, with her swim suit, flip-flops, sun tan lotion, and towel and walked off to the kitchen.
