I have an equivalent to a degree in Political Science. That does not make me an expert in the goings on in Washington D.C., or any other place for that matter. I wanted to learn about the United States government when I was in college, so instead of taking a scattershot approach to learning a little bit about a lot of things, I decided to take all of my electives in the area of Poly Sci. When it came time to graduate, I could have chosen between a degree in Journalism or Political Science. Because the Journalism and Political Science schools were both part of the larger Liberal Arts college at Auburn University, I could only get a degree in one, but not both subjects. I chose Journalism because I knew I could get an instant job when I graduated in 1978 (and I did. Thanks you Jack Simms). I didn’t feel confident about getting a job in Political Science. What in the world do political scientists to anyway?I was reading about the democrats in the Wisconsin state legislature running away and hiding, so that a quorum cannot be formed in the state legislature. The lack of a quorum will keep any legislative action from taking place until the absent public servants return to do their jobs. I was at first appalled by this cowardly action to run away and hide. That does not seem like the American way to me. Where I grew up, if you got elected to serve, then, by god you served, win, lose or draw. If you know you are going to lose a vote, should you run away and hide to shut down the process? What if all the football teams in America didn’t show up when they thought they were going to lose the game? There would be a lot of fans sitting around in a lot of stadiums across the country. The more I thought about the Wisconsin situation, the more I liked it. Maybe we can talk all the senators and congressmen in Washington D.C. to just run away. I don’t really see where they are helping all that much being there.
