I guess you can say that I am anti government. I like having the military to protect us from all the outside invaders. I know there is nothing as terrifying as seeing millions of Cuban soldiers come toward your beach house in Panama City Beach, Florida, in a flotilla of duct-taped-together cigar boxes, patched-up life rafts, floating cars and makeshift boats. I like the interstate highway system, but if you really want to see America at its best, drive cross country on two-lane state and federal roads. It makes for a much better trip and you get to meet someone along the way who actually lives in the places where you stop. I like Federal holidays, but this thing we are celebrating on Monday, Feb. 21, is a tough nut to figure. What do we do on Presidents Day? Play presidential trivia games? Make cherry pie? Get out the old ice cream churn so the pie can be homemade a la mode? Barbeque? It’s hard to get a good, hot fire going with snow on the ground. I even received a memo this week from the company where I consult concerning Presidents Day. It asked the employees to think about working on Presidents Day, to make the bottom line of the company look better in the first quarter. Got to please those stock holders, right? I would be willing to bet that 50% of our U.S. population today can’t even name 15 presidents. Hell, most people can’t even name the 52 states. For me, I will go outside early in the morning on Monday and run the ole Red, White and Blue up the flagpole, then gather the family around to participate in my favorite President’s Day tradition: the watering of the Chia Presdients Heads. I have Obama; both Big Bush and Little Bush; and Nixon, my favorite because I believe he kept me out of Vietnam. Now there is something we could celebrate. Since no one basically gives a shit about Presidents Day, maybe could celebrate those forgotten heroes who kept a lot of our asses out of Vietnam.
