This story was relayed to me from Jack Ridgeway, a good breakfast-eating buddy of mine. Thanks for the story Jack.

Would you dare to protect yourself against a 16-foot alligator with only a Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol? Well Loretta Smitherman did. This is her story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave and cool-headed woman.
Loretta Smitherman and her husband of 25 years, Jerry, were planning to get a divorce. To discuss the settlement, the couple decided to take a walk alongside one of the local bayous. While out walking near Houma, Louisiana, last Friday, the couple were attacked by a 16-foot mother alligator.
“The alligator just came out of nowhere,” an excited Loretta said describing the attack. “It was charging with those jaws wide open. I was scared half to death.
“My husband said it must have been a mommy gator protecting her nest because the gator was extremely aggressive.”
Loretta credits her Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with saving her life.
“When the gator started chasing us, it took only one shot to that bastard husband of mine’s kneecap to save me. The gator got him easily after I shot him and I was able to escape by just walking away.”
Loretta said she selected the Beretta for two reasons:
The accuracy of the light-weight and easy-to-hide pistol and the value.
“Heck, the money I saved on lawyer fees alone will be enough to pay for the pistol,” she said.
