Tinnitus is serious stuff.
Tinnitus is a condition that is characterized by what is known as a ringing in the ear. However no bells are being rung. While the sounds heard can be anything from a bird chirping to a locomotive bearing down on you at full volume, the sound most hear is a dial tone normally only heard in audio testing when your hearing is being tested.
Tinnitus is not taken seriously by people who don't have it but it is taken very seriously by those who do.
In many parts of Canada and the US, people who have developed tinnitus or a ringing noise in one or both ears end up seeing doctors who have little or no experience with the condition. As a result treatment can be completely ineffective or even make matters worse.
If you have the condition you need to find an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist who specializes in tinnitus. Not an easy task. Tinnitus is caused by one or more of the following: damage to the auditory nerve, the nerve endings in the inner ear, from something as common as a blow to the head, or infections that increase pressure on the auditory nerve as well as stress and being over-tired. Even your diet can be the cause or part of the cause. You will likely never know the exact cause unless the cause was an injury that was definitive.
The term white noise is used to describe constant low decibel droning noises whose effect can mask ringing in the ears. Having a radio on constantly can help. The problem is generally worst when trying to sleep unless you live alone. That’s because no one else wants to hear your version of white noise masking while they’re trying to sleep. At night, tinnitus can get a lot worse because normally when you’re trying to sleep, there’s no ambient noise in the room, just you and your auditory curse - and that’s where the real frustration and torture lives – in the privacy of your own skull. There is nothing you can do about it until you get help and getting drunk or drugged only makes it worse the next time.
White noise helps works by masking the ringing. But it only works if the white noise is louder than the ringing. If the ringing is really invasive nothing helps.
Tinnitus and deafness
Being partially or totally deaf does not mean you hear absolutely nothing. For many hearing impaired people, tinnitus causes auditory bedlam. The noise is pure hell, there is no escape and you can’t hear anything but the unmusical noise. For the totally deaf, there is bone conductive technology that may provide white noise relief. Communicating the specific noises the deaf person has so the technology can be tuned to meet the needs would be like trying to describe the colour red to a blind person.
If the ringing is found to be caused by infection you need a long term cure. That cure is not drugs. The cure is that you have to stay away from foods that cause mucus build-ups, inflammation and infection in your body. Those foods are red meat, flour products of any description, rice, bananas and dairy products. All of these foods gum up the body with fats and essentially becomes glue that traps other food particles which then rot. Dairy products are the absolute worst for that.
The medical community has known that since at least 1938 as medical textbooks at the time were following the transition of dairy products from unpasteurized to pasteurized by tracking ear infections in children. Before pasteurization ear infections were common. After pasteurization the number of ear infection cases skyrocketed to the point where 75% of children have had at least one ear infection by the time they are three years old.
Another cause of tinnitus is constipation. When your system is plugged up, the entire body is under pressure and slowly being poisoned. This is the commonest cause of tinnitus and nearly every other degenerative disease - a very provocative statement that I can back up. When a body is constipated every cell and every organ is stressed and every cell and organ is being fed toxified nutrients. It's entirely likely that your tinnitus started as an infant when you were transitioned from mother's milk to cow's milk - even earlier if you were never breast fed. (This is assuming the mother’s milk itself was untainted.) Cow's milk is bad news for babies despite what the dairy industry would have you believe. Luckily, Dr. Oz has finally gotten the message and stated categorically on his program last evening, Wednesday, April 27, 2011, that dairy products including eggs cause cancer (eggs are now considered as bad for you as second hand smoke). I’ve been saying this for thirty years – now I finally have unwitting medical support. So if you can’t stay away from dairy products to help your ear, then do it so you don’t develop cancer. Dairy products and other mucus forming foods cause constipation and having read the previous chapters on this condition, you know how dangerous that can be.
Your diet should consist of vegetables, fresh fruits and can include a little fish if you want to eliminate dietary contributing factors.
The only reason humans need red meat in their diet is for vitamin B12. Everything else comes from other foods as well. Take a good multivitamin and that will solve that aspect of the problem.
Cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke have been linked to ear infections because the medical community finally twigged to the fact that the four thousand odd deadly chemicals in smoke (including that from residential fireplaces) are known to cause respiratory irritation that leads to irritation, inflammation and ultimately infection that can lead to tinnitus. While children are most vulnerable, adults experience symptoms as well, though not as frequently reported. Children generally don’t mention their resulting tinnitus because they have no idea that what they’re hearing isn’t normal and shared by everyone else. Usually, tinnitus in children is discovered accidentally. In older children and adults it’s discovered as a result of a conversation during which it’s mentioned by the sufferer. Since many of the smoke molecules are Volatile Organic Compounds which are solvents, these chemicals don’t just have to be inhaled. They’re small enough to migrate straight through the skin and are thus known as transdermals. Transdermals are anti-life chemicals that degrade cellular DNA. There’s currently no way to predict where in the body these chemicals will end up but the most exposed organ is the brain which is exposed to the atmosphere until the age of sixteen. The chemical assault on the brain can thus reasonably be considered a causal effect of tinnitus in children and one that children can easily be protected from.
Tired and stressed
When you have ringing in the ears, you absolutely cannot allow yourself to become over-tired as that makes the ringing worse. Same for stress - easier said than done, but being aware of what can happen, may allow you to take evasive action.
Ringing in the ears is an invisible, physical handicap that can be quite dangerous because it interrupts attention, and can cause disorientation. You have to take this very seriously including the food as the ringing can become so loud you are essentially deaf in both ears and tormented beyond belief.
Tinnitus is an escalating condition that has many mechanical as well as dietary causes that can act alone or in concert with each other to make your life worse if you fail to take tinnitus seriously.
Mechanical causes include blows to the head from any sources but particularly from sports contact where a player is hit hard by another player or simply falls and gets his or her bell rung. It only takes one hard hit to the head to cause a lifetime of suffering. When two heads are banged together that can do it too - especially when we are children.
Football and hockey players are some of those who commonly end up with tinnitus. So do fighters such as boxers, wrestlers and those participants in martial arts.
Participation in such sports comes with the threat of tinnitus and auditory torture for life.
The MP3 Generation
Modern technology has done wonders for the creation, proliferation and the enjoyment of all forms of music in many different formats. It wasn’t a significant auditory problem until the age of Rock and Roll. That’s when the noise level went into the stratosphere. The first identifiable demographic to suffer the effects were the musicians themselves followed quickly by their fans in numbers that are still growing exponentially. It’s generally understood that noise over 85 dB causes auditory damage. Constant exposure to noise over that level expands the damage painlessly and relatively quickly to the point. Personal devices such as iPods allow listeners to carry their music with them and listen to it via ear buds. They are free to listen to the music as loud as they want which means the incidence of auditory damage of all sorts is escalating in lockstep with the sales increases for these devices. The irony is that once the music stops, the head noise assault begins. At that point a threshold has been crossed and there is no turning back the clock or the mental torture.
A Neurological Burden
The residual effect of tinnitus is that it saps physical and mental energy constantly. As a result, people with tinnitus are less alert than they otherwise would be. You can't compare one person's alertness to another's since people have different levels of alertness for differing reasons.
The bottom line is that tinnitus is a tiring burden to the nervous system that is passed on to the rest of the body in every dimension you can think of. Every cell in the body is affected in a variety of ways by the brain’s anguish. Burdens reduce efficiency. Reduced efficiency can and does result in mental mistakes and physical accidents that can be career or life ending depending on circumstances and cumulative effects.
As tinnitus progresses, unless controlled, it logically progresses to depression that itself can escalate to harsh social consequences that include antisocial behaviour, divorce, job loss and finally suicide.
At this point there is no such thing as a surgical procedure or any other procedure or device that can claim to eliminate tinnitus. Sometimes an accident or even surgery for some other ear problem relieves the tinnitus. If so that is akin to winning the lottery – rare but it does happen.
More commonly, surgery reduces head noise but as the person returns to normal daily activities, the head noise returns. Possibly if you extended your convalescence beyond what is generally possible or considered reasonable, the outcome would be permanent. If so I have not heard of it happening.
Tinnitus as a result of surgery and drugs
A side effect of surgery, particularly on the ear; say a stapendectomy operation to improve hearing by replacing the middle ear bone(s) with a silver wire results in inadvertent collateral damage that can’t be anticipated.
Help is on the way
There are treatments for tinnitus. White noise was the first as noted earlier. In addition there are therapies that focus on re-training the brain to ignore the tinnitus. I haven’t experienced any of those therapies myself yet so I don’t feel qualified to comment on them beyond saying that they are claimed to work. I haven’t heard a patient who has been through the process say it did work. But I feel that if you have tinnitus, this is an area that should be explored and tried. Apparently not all sufferers are helped but enough are that this is not a stone that should be left unturned.
But not that much help
Despite the fact that the medical community in general and the Ear Nose and Throat sector in particular has known about the connection between diet and particularly the negative impact of dairy products since 1938, don’t expect that situation to change much in your lifetime.
The reason it won’t change is because for change to happen, the way medical care itself is formatted would have to be turned inside out and revamped completely.
Our society and indeed our species has been able to thrive because of our ability to simplify complex tasks. Our society and all it’s components are divided and subdivided into sectors something like having a loaf of bread then slicing and dicing it while maintaining it’s shape. While it still looks the same there’s no longer much communication between the little squares which now comprise the original loaf.
Medical practice is divided into specialties and types of practice. Unfortunately, just like in the diced loaf of bread, there isn’t much communication between the sectors. Any problem that requires interdisciplinary cooperation like that between a surgeon and an anesthesiologist is a rarity and not always a happy marriage of practices and procedures.
In the case of medical versus dietary applications for prevention or treatment of a medical condition, there is almost no cooperation at all.
That situation exists for a number of reasons:
(1) The medical profession has almost no nutritional medical knowledge base and even less nutritional education (although that is slowly changing at the rate a bristlecone pine grows);
(2) The medical profession calls the nutritional shots on what can and cannot be given to a patient undergoing medical treatment;
(3) Nutritionists and Dieticians are routinely ignored by doctors
(4) In Canada, doctors get their nutritional information from the Canadian Food Guide which is a worthless pile of crap that is applicable to practically no-one on a health restoration basis.
(5) There is no interest in the current medical system in using common sense to cure anything where money could be made on pedalling a drug or a procedure.
(6) The term Nutritional Medicine is unknown to most doctors
Cleaning up your body from the inside out remains the best and most sensible way to regain lost health and possibly reduce the impact of tinnitus. It’s also the most cost-effective.
